How you feed, trim and water your lawn can help it withstand fungal illness like dollar spot and brown spot.
Avoid lawn diseases by maintaining healthy turfgrass. Preserving a healthy, strongly growing lawn is the best way to prevent an extreme illness outbreak in turfgrass.
If any of these elements are missing or in excess, the yard might end up being stressed and more susceptible to disease. For an illness to take place, all three sides of the "illness triangle" need to exist (Fig. 1). Even if a disease-causing pathogen exists, infection won't happen unless the environment (i.e., temperature, quantity of water, and so on) contributes to disease advancement and prone turf is offered.
Credit: UC IPM Lots of typical illness are active only under specific ecological conditions and will affect the yard only for a brief time. When the weather becomes more beneficial to development of the turfgrass, the lawn will often recover on its own if proper cultural practices are followed.
We can't control the weather, picking the ideal grass and good cultural practices are keys to reducing illness. Fungicides are hardly ever needed for lawns when the best grass is planted and preserved properly. The cause of lawn damage is often hard to determine, and diseases aren't always the primary cause.
Illness tend to begin off as small patches or spots of dying turfs that top time. If the damage is sudden, widespread, and serious, other bugs or issues such as bugs, pathogens, weeds, or environmental stresssuch as too much or too little wetness or fertilizermay be contributing to the observed symptoms.
The Intersection of Science and Grass TypeWatering problems are the most common reason for tarnished yards. Fixing damaged sprinklers and performing "catch can tests" to ensure even water coverage might be all that is essential to enhance the health and appearance of a yard. (See the Irrigation area.) No amount of fungicide will control an issue that results from poor watering practices.
Such diseases frequently are diagnosed by recognizing signs of the disease and signs of the causal agent. Normal symptoms and signs include leaf spots; white, grainy growth; thin, open yard; and little to large areas of stained or dying lawn. Noticeable parts of the pathogen (called signs)such as whitish, cottony growth or small, difficult, dormant structures (sclerotia)are extremely beneficial in the identification process.
Affected lawn areas can become discolored and lose density rapidly. The most common illness taking place in home yards in California are listed below. See the UC Guide to Healthy Yards to find out more about how to handle yards and identify issues. Dollar spot, triggered by Sclerotinia homeocarpa, in a yard.
Ali Harivandi: Sclerotinia homeocarpa, Lanzia sp., Moellerodiscus sp.: bermudagrass, annual bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass, Seashore paspalum, zoysiagrass: small, circular areas from 15 inches in diameter; areas might merge to form big, irregular areas; leaves appear watersoaked then brown, often exhibiting a reddish band throughout the leaf; fine, white cobwebby threads seen in morning: moderate temperatures (6080F); excess moisture or water tension; fog; thatch; survives in soil as hard, dark structures (sclerotia): fertilize adequately; reduce thatch; water proper length of time to a depth of 46 inches however don't extend interval too long; maintain air flow; compost leading dressings can suppress disease: if present in previous years, fungicide may be beneficial; use in early spring or fall before symptoms take place Fairy ring brown field mushrooms, Agaricus cupreobrunneus, fruiting in a circle in a field.
: all lawn grasses: a dark green band of turf establishes in a circle (4 inches approximately 30 feet) or semicircle in moist grass; mushrooms might or might not be present; an area of brown, passing away grass might take place just behind the dark green band; a 2nd ring of passing away yard may appear inside the circle; weeds typically attack: soils high in thatch or undecomposed raw material consisting of lignin: apply adequate nitrogen; aerate soil for better water penetration, water greatly in holes for a number of days; verticut if more than 1/2 inch of thatch accumulates; rake mushrooms to improve look of grass; to remove, eliminate turf and root zone including white, cottony mass to a depth of 12 inches and 2 feet beyond outer edge of the ring; fill up with tidy soil and reseed or resod: fungicides readily available, but control has been unpredictable Circular areas brought on by Fusarium blight in yearly bluegrass.
