McCain: Ophiosphaerella korrae: bermudagrass, Seashore paspalum, zoysiagrass: circular areas of dead yard 612 inches in diameter appear in spring when growth resumes; spots might coalesce to form big areas; generally affects turfgrass more than 2 years of ages: impacts inactive plants; most severe when soil temperatures are < 65F; survives as sclerotia and in contaminated roots and stolons: eliminate dead turf; fertilize in summer to keep vigor; don't overfertilize in late summer; water appropriate length of time: fungicides available but primarily prevented by cultural practices in California Summer season patch in turfgrass, caused by Magnaporthe poae.

Nelson: Magnaporthe poae: bluegrasses, great fescues: circular, yellow or tan locations of dead and passing away plants approximately 1 foot in diameter; can have green, obviously healthy plants in center; roots, crowns, and stolons have dark brown fungal hyphae on them; vascular staining and cortical rot happen in later stages: high temperatures (> 85) in late spring through the summertime; most severe when grass is cut low or when soil wetness is excessive: aerate soil and use slow-release nitrogen; enhance drain; minimize compaction; water suitable length of time; don't mow too low; control thatch; lower soil pH if higher than 7: systemic fungicides in fall typically required when illness has actually been serious For currently signed up fungicides, see Insect Management Standards: Turfgrass.

There is no one perfect turfgrass appropriate for all yards. The kind of turf you select for your lawn should be compatible with your environment, expected use and upkeep level, and visual desires; it also needs to have some resistance to typical diseases. Cool-season grasses (e.g., bluegrasses, fescues, ryegrasses, and so on) carry out best at daytime temperatures between 70 to 85F.

Augustinegrass, and zoysiagrass) perform finest between 80 to 95F. Typically, diseases most effect grasses when they aren't intensely growing. Cool-season grass is more vulnerable to disease problems during the summertime, while warm-season grasses are more prone to illness in late fall through early spring. Strive to select a grass that grows well in your conditions.

Some species are more heat- or drought-tolerant than others. New and enhanced cultivars of yard turfs offering greater illness resistance, color, texture, density, and uniformity have been developed the previous several years. Contact a respectable nursery or the UC Cooperative Extension workplace in your county for specific suggestions. See the publication Turfgrass Choice for the Home Landscape listed in Recommendations.

Advanced Disease and Fungus Control Strategies

Great cultural practices consist of irrigation, fertilization, mowing, soil cultivation, and thatch elimination. Table 1 details cultural practices that assist prevent particular illness. Much of California has a Mediterranean climate identified by rains in winter and spring and really little rain throughout summer season and fall. Throughout the state, yards need watering.

Using excessive or not adequate water can lead to unhealthy, slow-growing lawn that is susceptible to pathogens. Waterlogged soils are poorly aerated, which restricts root development, promotes some illness, and allows algae and moss to thrive. In general, a deeply watered lawn develops a deeper and more substantial vertical root system, which provides it with greater dry spell and disease resistance than a shallowly watered yard.

Warm-season turfgrasses are more drought-resistant than cool-season turfs and require about 20% less water. See Table 2 for information on how lots of minutes to water warm- and cool-season lawns every week in different parts of California, based on the output of the irrigation system or hose-end sprinkler. It is best to water the lawn completely at longer intervals, up until overflow just begins, rather than watering a little every day.

How to Spot and Cure Lawn Diseases

If a grass needs 40 minutes of irrigation each week but overflow begins after 20 minutes, water twice a week for 20 minutes. In cases where soil uses up water so slowly that runoff takes place before 10 minutes, water biking is essential. To cycle, irrigate up until runoff simply starts, turn the system off, and repeat the process in 30 minutes before the soil surface dries.

To identify sprinkler output, conduct "catch can tests" by setting small, empty, straight-sided, equal-sized containers such as tuna or cat food cans on top of your yard every 10 to 15 feet in between sprinkler heads run by the exact same valve (Fig. 2) and run the system for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, shut off the system and measure the amount of water in each can with a ruler to figure out the average quantity of water per can.
